AhlulBayt News Agency: The administration of US President Donald Trump has withdrawn $450 million in funding from Harvard University, just a day after the institution denied allegations of antisemitism and liberal bias.
The White House’s Joint Task Force to Combat Antisemitism announced on Tuesday that eight federal agencies had terminated approximately $450 million in grants to Harvard. This amount is in addition to the $2.2 billion that was previously frozen by the Trump administration.
In its statement, the task force described Harvard as "a breeding ground for virtue signaling and discrimination." The statement was signed by attorneys from the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Beyond the funding cuts, Harvard is also facing multiple investigations from the Trump administration. The government has accused the university of potential civil rights violations in its handling of pro-Palestinian protests last year.
Harvard President Alan Garber has repeatedly rejected these allegations, insisting that the university is nonpartisan and has taken steps to address antisemitism on campus. He described the federal sanctions as an "unlawful attempt to control fundamental aspects of our university’s operations."
Harvard is the largest academic institution targeted by the Trump administration over claims of antisemitism and support for pro-Palestinian activities.
Trump has demanded that US universities comply with his administration’s directives, including policies related to diversity initiatives, financial oversight, and international student admissions.
Columbia University and Ohio State University are among other major institutions that have also lost federal funding.
